ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT

Assessment Services

Psychological Assessment

Psychological assessments are provided to better understand the cognitive, academic,
and social/emotional functioning of children 5 to 19 years of age. Each psychological
assessment is individualized to the particular client and can help to identify:

  • Academic Strengths and Weaknesses
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Emotional or Behavioural Difficulties
  • Intellectual Developmental Level or Delays
  • Mental Health Diagnoses

Most psychological assessments include:

  • Parent interview
  • Child/Youth Interview
  • 8-10 hours of testing using standardized assessment measures
  • Questionnaires completed by parents, caregivers, teachers etc.
  • Review of school records or previous reports

Assessment findings are compiled in a written report that is provided to families
outlining the strengths and weaknesses, diagnoses, academic recommendations, and if
needed, recommendations for intervention.

Gifted Testing

Gifted testing is conducted to determine whether a child or youth’s intellectual ability is in the range that would allow them to qualify for access to educational programming for students who are gifted. Because intellectual ability is the only domain assessed in gifted testing, the presence of learning disabilities cannot be identified in this type of assessment.

Diagnostic Assessments

Diagnostic assessments are conducted to identify the presence of a mental health diagnosis and provide treatment recommendations. Most diagnostic assessments include:

  • Diagnostic interviewing
  • Completion of Questionnaires
  • Review of Medical Records
  • Consultation with other care providers
  • Classroom Observation

Assessment findings are compiled in a written report that is provided to families
outlining diagnoses and recommendations for intervention.

Treatment Services

Individual and family therapy services are provided at Oakville Chiropractic and Family Health. The approach to treatment is eclectic, borrowing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches, attachment theory and systemic approaches. Therapeutic methods that have been shown in clinical research to be effective for the client’s particular concerns are integrated into treatment.

Although this philosophy guides the initial approach to therapy, therapy is always personalized taking into account client preferences, concerns, and treatment goals.
